Activities Help Support Healing, Connection, and Hope at Vibra Hospital of Denver

In a critical care hospital, healing is measured in many ways.

For patients recovering from serious illness or injury, progress may look like breathing a little easier, taking a few steps during therapy, or seeing a wound begin to heal. But recovery isn’t limited to clinical milestones. It can also be seen in moments of normalcy and connection during a long hospitalization.

That is where activities can play a meaningful role.

For patients in long-term acute care, the hospital has often been part of their lives for far longer than they ever expected. Many have already spent weeks or even months hospitalized, and the recovery journey can bring uncertainty, anxiety, and emotional ups and downs.

Several patients and a staff member sit together outdoors on a bench and in a wheelchair under a shaded tree, smiling and holding colorful handmade craft projects during a group activity.

In circumstances where days can feel long and unfamiliar, activities offer moments of connection, encouragement, and routine. Whether through games, art, conversation, or seasonal celebrations, these experiences can help patients feel more engaged in their recovery and more connected to their progress.

At Vibra Hospital of Denver, the Activities Program supports patients as they begin making clinical progress. Led by Activities Director Charlotte Williams, the program helps patients stay involved, encouraged, and hopeful as they work toward the next step in their recovery.

“The Activities Program plays an important role as our patients begin progressing clinically,” shared Lamar McBride, CEO of Vibra Hospital of Denver. “Activities help fill the gap between medical care and physical therapy, keeping patients engaged, connected, and motivated during their recovery.”

For Charlotte, the impact of the program is often seen in small but meaningful moments: a patient choosing to leave their room, starting a conversation, or encouraging another patient.

“I always tell patients how important it is to get out of their own heads and out of their rooms,” Charlotte shared. “Sometimes, just by showing up and taking part, they may be helping someone else that day, too.”

For families, these moments can also provide a meaningful glimpse of their loved one’s progress beyond the bedside. They are reminders that, even during a complex recovery, patients are more than their diagnoses, treatments, or medical challenges.

At Vibra Hospital of Denver and across Vibra Healthcare, activity programs help support a whole-person approach to healing by offering patients moments of connection, motivation, and hope.
